“I came into the Learning Center because I wanted a better job. I knew there were great jobs at the refinery, but I needed to pass an R.S.O. test in order to get in. I had taken the test before I came to the Learning Center, but couldn’t pass. The people at the Learning Center were very kind and understanding. They took the time to show me what I needed to know to succeed. They started me out slowly and then moved me up quickly. Attending the Learning Center not only helped me pass the test, but also taught me to be more aware of what I was doing. It also helped me do other things at work, such as filling out forms. I now have a great job at the refinery. I would definitely recommend the Learning Center to anyone. As far as I’m concerned, the help I got at Learning Center was sent from god above.”

“I thought it would be nightmare to go back to school after 37 years, but the experience has been uplifting and rewarding. The respect and patience I felt from everyone in the Learning Center gave me the confidence to go through the GED test. Each aide had his or her own helpful way of teaching a learning strategy or process that I could understand. The books for each subject were easy to learn from and progressed at a pace that was perfect for a new student. All the friendly faces and the encouragement from the other students made getting my GED on of the most memorable times of my life.”

Leticia says the GED will increase the number of job opportunities for her, and she is now planning on furthering her education and training so that she can support herself and her children. She is considering working in an office setting or as an aesthetician.

"The Learning Center at Long Beach City College has helped me in more than one way. I appreciate the staff for being patient with me and answering all the questions that I had. They have played a big part in my advancement into a new phase of my life. It took me a little over a year to get my GED. At times I felt like giving up, however the staff was there to encourage me and remind me of all the benefits I could reap from getting my GED.They were also there for me when I needed someone, anyone, to talk to about problems, personal issues or whatever I had on my mind. They gave me the best advice they could offer, and it helped me make better decisions that I had made in the past. The hours and days that the Learning Center is open are very convenient. There is no more room for making up excuses.I want to thank God for putting the right people in the right places and the people at the Long Beach City College Learning Center for being interested in me"

“I decided to go back to school to during the summer of 2007. I wanted to get my GED since I wasn’t able to graduate due to the loss of my mother in 1996. Growing up to real life responsibilities in caring for my younger siblings forced me to put school on the back burner and work long hours just to support our family. However the desire to come back and finish school has been a dream that has finally come true. I started attending the Learning Center at Long Beach City College during the summer of 2007 with the hopes of completing my GED. The Center was great; their staff was very organized with well-educated instructors and aides. They helped me in all the right areas I needed in order to complete my GED. I enjoyed my accomplishment through the Learning Center, which enabled me to keep pushing harder. I decided to stay with the Center even after I received my GED, and I have now earned my Certificate of Basic Skills for the Workplace. I give a lot of credit to the LBCC Learning Center for their hard work and guidance in enabling me to do this in such a short time. I am now going to begin classes to prepare me for a major in education. Due to this experience, I have made all of my dreams and more come true.”

Sabrina has seen an academic counselor and is now enrolling in other college classes in order to develop a career working with children, probably in education.
Steven R. Edwards “The Learning Center is an amazing place. Not only did they assist me in getting my GED, but they have also been instrumental in my maintaining a 3.865 GPA. If it were not for Sean and the rest of the instructors in the Learning Center, I would not be able to understand my Algebra class.”
