The Learning Center specializes in helping students who need to develop their foundational skills in mathematics, reading, writing and grammar. The faculty and staff can help you progress from your current skill level to the college-entry level in any of the above areas. Students need these basic skills in order to succeed in college.

Research in education has shown that students who participate in basic skills development are more successful in their college level classes. Our own college research department has found that students who enroll in the Learning Center are more successful in their later English 105, Math 110, and Reading 883 courses than students who do not attend.
If your skills in reading, writing, or math fall below the 12th grade level, you probably need some extra time and practice to develop your abilities in these areas in order to succeed in college. The Learning Center can help you. If you feel that you need to brush up on some of the skills you learned in school but may have forgotten, this is the place to do it. If you can’t
remember how to do fractions, for example, we can
help out. Or if you need a review of how to use commas
or other punctuation or grammar in your writing,
we can do it. Sometimes students just have to get
back in the habit of reading for educational purposes.
If you have been advised by a teacher that you need
to work on some fundamental skills to be more successful,
come here. We have a full staff of highly qualified
instructors who are sensitive to the needs of students,
as well as instructional aides and tutors to help
you along the way. We also have a great variety of
materials and instruction to help you, including
computer based learning systems, printed materials,
small group workshops and one-on-one instruction.
We tailor your learning path to your personal preferences
and learning style as much as possible.
All of this is non-credit and not graded. You can relax knowing that we can help you prepare for college without the stress of worrying about a grade. This gives you time and opportunity to take advantage of the many other resources available to students of LBCC; you can easily schedule an appointment with academic counseling, check into financial aid, or find the perfect job in the career center because our course offers you the flexibility to arrange study around your busy schedule. As a student in the Learning Center, you can get acclimated to the college environment while you prepare for the more challenging work ahead.
