In addition to a B.A. in Spanish from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and an M.A. from Claremont Graduate University, Phyllis has elementary and secondary teaching credentials.
She has taught basic skills and adult education and specializes in teaching learning/study skills in the Learning and Academic Resources Department. Phyllis is a certified trainer of learning styles and learner diversity.

Blaire received her A.A. from Long Beach City College, her B.A. from University of California Irvine, and will be completing her Masters of Education in Reading January 2008 from the University of LaVerne. She taught in Long Beach public schools for 15 years, 3 years as a reading specialist. Blaire has been an instructor in the Basic Adult Education department at LBCC since 2003.

Anthony has an Associate of Arts Degree from Cypress College and Bachelor’s and Master’s of Arts degrees from California State University at Long Beach. He is fluent in Spanish and a Clinical Hypnotherapist, certified by the American Institute of Hypnotherapy.

Hi! I’ve been teaching in the Adult Learning Center for the past eight years because I love seeing our students reach their personal and educational goals. My academic background is in English, ESL and Linguistics with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in those areas from CSULB. I’ve taught at LBCC for more than 12 years and love working here.
I was born in Long Beach and am a graduate of a community college. My personal passions include spending time with my family, art, N.Y. Times crossword puzzles, reading, cooking, gardening and doing my part to protect our beautiful planet.

Barbara has been helping students achieve their goals here in the Adult Learning Center for 14 years. Before that, she received her BA in English and her MS in Education with a specialty in Reading from California State University, Fullerton. She has taught reading, study skills, and English at Cypress College, Cerritos College, and here at LBCC. She has also tutored privately and worked as a Tutor Trainer. In addition, she taught reading in the English Skills Center for many years before moving to Basic Adult Education.

A native of Hawaii, Casey graduated from the University of Hawaii with a B.A. in Psychology. He received his M.A. from CSULB in Administration and worked for the Long Beach Unified School District as a principal, counselor and teacher for 34 years. He also served in the U.S. Army and Reserves for 28 years, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. He has taught Basic Adult Education at LBCC since 1970.
When he’s not teaching, Casey enjoys the outdoors, nature, camping, traveling, learning, being a cowboy, farming and tennis. He owns and operates the Shim Coffee, Protea, and Botanical Farm in Utopia (Kula, Maui). Casey invites you to come to the Learning Center and improve your life and wants you to remember that every day is special!

Welcome to the Learning Center! I have a B.A. in English from Southwest Baptist University in Missouri and an M.A. in Communications from University of New Orleans. I have been an ESL, English and BAE instructor for more than 18 years. I have been with LBCC for 18 years.

Kathy works in several departments on the PCC campus of LBCC, so in addition to the Learning Center, you may find her in the Tech Center assisting students in the trade and vocational programs or teaching Learn 11. She has a B.A. degree in English and master’s degrees in business and education. She enjoys getting to know and helping LBCC students.

Melvin received his B.A. from Cal State Long Beach and his M.A. in Computer-based Education form CSU Dominguez Hills. He has taught subjects such as GED preparation and Computer Applications at adult schools and community colleges throughout Southern California. He is also the published author of several historical novels. Melvin is a Learning Center teacher because he is dedicated to helping students achieve their educational goals.

Welcome to the Learning Center! As a professional educator, I have been preparing all my life to assist you in obtaining your GED or improving your academic skills. I attended Long Beach schools as a child and the returned after obtaining bachelor and master’s degrees so that I could teach and become an administrator in those same schools. I have been an instructor in the Adult Learning Center since 1978. Outside of education, I enjoy snow skiing, bike riding, working on my classic Jaguar and traveling with my wife.
